Intel Cancels Planned Wafer-Testing Facility in India
September 15, 2005
According to the Business Standard, Intel recently cancelled its plans to establish a US$700 million wafer-testing facility in India as it was not successful in persuading the Indian government to give it considerable tax concessions for a period of 15 years. Concessions requested by the company included tax waivers and an upfront payment of US$100 million by the government. Intel had been eyeing the Chennai and Noida regions for the facility. The Indian government denied Intel's requests, which were larger in scope than concessions currently given in special economic zones, because it feared it would set a precedent for other international companies. Furthermore, the government concluded that the concessions were not in line with the expected amount of value-added activities at the facility.
